Historical Metallurgy is the international peer-reviewed journal of the Historical Metallurgy Society. It is published annually in two parts as a platinum open-access journal, as well as in printed copy for those members of the society who chose to receive it.

Historical Metallurgy evolved out of the Bulletin of the Historical Metallurgy Society, which was first published in 1963, becoming rebranded as Historical Metallurgy with volume 8 in 1974. Volume 53 was the last to be produced solely in print format, but all content from volumes 1 to 53 is being made available through the journal website.

Historical Metallurgy was relaunched as a platinum open access journal from January 2022. This means the journal is now both free to access and free to publish in. Historical Metallurgy is positioned to be the premier outlet for research in any branch of historical- or archaeo-metallurgy.

The Historical Metallurgy Society is offering new membership bands to accompany the digital journal, to encourage the global community of historical metallurgists to take a stake in the success of the innovative venture. The new platform will achieve rapid publication of the work of researchers from around the world, whilst maintaining the Society’s long-standing reputation for high-quality publication and robust peer review.
